LL-37: Full-Length Peptide, Fragments and Why Length Changes the Question

Comprendre le LL-37 et son précurseur, distinguer un fragment défini du peptide complet, et relier les questions de recherche au document approprié.

3 - temps de lecture : quelques minutes

Why the protein database looks larger than 37 residues

Le NCBI protein reference for human cathelicidin links the CAMP precursor with antimicrobial peptide LL-37. LL-37 is a mature 37-residue segment, not the entire precursor sequence. This is a common source of confusion when a buyer copies the first sequence shown in a protein database.

Record both the reference accession and the exact requested segment. The accession provides biological context; the explicit sequence defines the material. Neither field, on its own, proves what a supplier’s container contains.

A fragment is not simply a smaller pack size

A shorter peptide changes residue boundaries, not just the amount delivered. Removing residues can change properties relevant to a research question. A fragment designation therefore needs its complete sequence and numbering reference. Fragment 17–29 is incomplete if nobody states the sequence to which those numbers refer.

In an illustrative comparison, one offer might be full-length and another a defined fragment. Dividing both prices by mg would produce a neat calculation for two different materials. Resolve identity before calculating the comparison.

Full length, fragment and precursor are distinct fields
Name in a file Possible meaning Clarification needed
CAMP / cathelicidin Precursor biological reference Requested mature segment
LL-37 Full-length mature peptide designation Exact offered sequence and termini
LL-37-derived fragment Selected sequence region Boundaries and numbering reference
LL-37 variant Changed residue or modification Complete structural difference

Know what kind of scientific claim you are reading

LL-37 is studied in antimicrobial and host-response research. That context does not mean every experiment measures the same endpoint or that a laboratory result establishes treatment performance. A cell experiment, a molecular interaction measurement and a test of a supplied material answer different questions.

For a purchasing decision, ask what the planned assay requires: full-length sequence, a specific fragment, terminal chemistry or another defined variant. Leave human health claims out of the material specification; they do not repair an unresolved structural question.

Ask about the material that will actually be delivered

Confirm the offered sequence, terminal state, chemical form and declared constituents. For an assay-sensitive project, identify the relevant evidence with the laboratory reviewer rather than assuming an HPLC badge answers all questions. For example, identity evidence and the basis of the stated content remain separate from a chromatographic purity percentage.

Also retain the physical-format statement. A literature description does not establish a supplier’s formulation or storage requirements. If a different form is proposed, keep it as a marked alternative until the laboratory has assessed the change.

Questions posées par les acheteurs

Can a full-length COA cover a fragment?

Not merely because the names are related. The sample identity and test scope must match the material being supplied.

Does antimicrobial research make a catalog vial a medicine?

No. A research context does not establish approval, clinical performance or suitability for human use.

La prochaine étape

Send the intended sequence or clearly identified literature reference. Ask the supplier to confirm full length, fragment or variant explicitly before quoting.
